Can you find the shark teeth?

The boys and I are always going to the beach. Although there are a lot of activities that we like to do, one of our favorite is to walk the beach and find shark teeth. This is something I have been doing for the past 20 years and my kids are just now at the age that they are starting to want to tag along. Although they have not found any teeth by themselves, they love to help pick up ones that I find for them. On our last walk I decided to bring along my camera and take some photos of the shark teeth that we found. I thought it might to fun to post a shark tooth hunt to see how many you can find. Remember that shark teeth come in all different shapes and sizes and there might be more than one tooth in a photo. Click the photos to zoom in and get a better look.

Leave me a comment letting me know how many shark teeth you think you found. Some may be easy to spot while others will take a trained eye. Also let me know if any of you have any kids that might be interested in a little bag of shark teeth. If some people show interest I will do another post and give away all the shark teeth that I find that day.

Good Luck!

Don't Do It: Part Three (We did it...)

I've written a couple posts on car seat safety in the past. It is one of the things that I am extremely passionate about and have spent countless hours/days/weeks researching the best way to keep my kids and the kids I see in clinic as safe as possible. You can check out my previous posts Don't Do It and Don't Do It: Part Two.

Monkey turned 3 last October (6 months ago! what?!), and we made the big switch to a forward-facing car seat position shortly after that. He had reached 34 lbs with a limit of his "older generation" Britax Marathon Classic (in Onyx pattern) being 35 pounds for rear-facing. It's the seat he rides in most often in Trey's truck. He also has an amazing Britax Boulevard in my 4Runner that we absolutely love! Who could not love CowMOOflage!

So what was the big deal about turning him forward-facing in the car? Well... it's a fun, exciting change, but it comes with risks and there are certain things that change when buckling up your little forward-facing sweetie. First off - follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to safely install the seat forward-facing. Make sure to install the tether system to help protect your little guy or gal. The tether is important rear-facing, too but I feel it is even more important when forward-facing!

The tether system is a series of straps behind the seat that help lock the seat to the car and prevent injury (especially head injury) by reducing the amount of movement of the seat and diverting crash forces to a larger area of the seat and away from your child. The tether system, harness and seat belt work together to prevent excessive forward motion of your child's head (think prevention of major whiplash or even worse).

When converting to forward-facing it is also important to note that the location of the shoulder harness straps change. Instead of the straps being at or below the shoulders, now the straps must be at or above the shoulders.

Notice Monkey's clip is at the nipple/arm pit line and his straps are right at to a little above his shoulder height. The strap cover had been pulled down slightly on the picture on the left to show strap height at the shoulders.

Chunky at 2 years old and a little under 27lbs remains rear-facing in his Britax Marathon and Boulevard. He will be rear-facing until at least 3 years old just like his big brother!

I included this "by the numbers" information in my previous post, but I think everyone should read it:

1. Children outgrow their rear-facing seats when reaching either the weight-limit of the seat or when there is ONE inch of room between the top of the child's head and the top of the car seat's shell. How do you tell? Check out this how-to properly measure from car-seat.org. There are a few exceptions to this rule so always check out your seat's safety manual to learn the particulars for your individual seat.

2. TWO years of age AND 30 pounds is the "new" recommendation for how long to keep a child rear-facing. You can go longer until you reach the limit of the car safety seat.

3. My boys will be at least THREE years old before I turn their car seats to forward-facing. At the rate they are currently growing, they will probably not reach 30 pounds until then. We turned Monkey slightly after his third birthday.

4. The British Medical Journal published a study indicating that children should ride rear-facing until age FOUR to reduce head, neck and chest injuries.

5. FIVE-point harnesses spread out the force of a crash over a larger area of the body when compared to a belt-positioning booster. It is recommended to keep a child in a 5-point harness until at least 4 years of age and 40 pounds. FIVE or six years of age is even better for most kids.

Sleep Eating

Poor baby missed his nap yesterday, and this is what happened... You really need to watch the third one to see the full effect of Chunky's food-induced sleep coma.

Chunky Gymnastics

We can't forget about Chunky's gymnastics class since we posted about Monkey and how much he loves his! Chunky participates in a Daddy-Toddler class with Trey once a week. They work on gross motor development, balancing and a little bit of following instructions. I have a noticed a big improvement in Chunky's balance and coordination since starting the class. I don't know if the class really has anything to do with it or if it is just his normal development, but this kid has moves! He has always been our little climber, but now he has a little more balance and guts to do new things. He also gets a little more social interaction than just playing with big brother. He even got his very first kiss on the day that I was able to attend his class! I was watching him play in the big foam pit when an "older woman" (probably closer to 3!) swept out of nowhere and planted a big one right on his lips. I was standing right there with my camera in hand... but I was so shocked I just stood there speechless! I missed getting Chunky's first kiss on camera! He acted like it was totally no big deal and kept playing - our little stud muffin!

Chunky's Birthday Fish...The One That Got Away

We were fortunate enough to spend a couple days at the beach last week for Chunky's birthday. On his actual birthday we decided that we would spend most of the day at the beach letting the boys splash around in the waves and ride their new boogie boards. Seeing that we would be down on the beach most of the day, I saw this as a great opportunity to get a line in the water to try and catch a fish. When fishing from the beach I will drive a steel post with a rod holder attached to it in the ground so that way I can place my fishing rod in the holder and walk away to spend time playing with the boys. After catching some bait I put out two lines then waited to see if anything would swim along and take the bait. While I waited I headed back to the water to try and catch some more bait. As I was treading out into the water, a huge fish decided to take the bait. The fish pulled so hard that it actually lifted the fishing pole out of the rod holder and started to pull everything into the water. I yelled to Monica, who was back on the beach, just in time for her to run after my fishing rod and catch it for me as it was going in the water. She picked it up and held on for dear life until I was able to reach her. I could tell right away it was a big fish, and after a 10 or 15 minute battle I was able to land the fish. The fish turned out to be about a 40 inch redfish that probably weighed close to 30-35 pounds.

Chunky standing next to the rod holder checking the line waiting for a fish to bite.

Chunky didn't know what to think of the fish since it was bigger than him.

Chunky finally came close to the fish after I told him it wouldn't eat him.

Monkey came over to get in the picture, and Chunky got the courage to touch the redfish.

After snapping a couple quick pictures of the fish with the boys I returned it to the water. I spent a couple minutes helping the fish regain its strength and then we all watched as it swam away. As Monkey would later say to our family... the fish was "The one that got away."

StaysAtHomeDad

P.S. Monica's addendum: Monkey was so sad that Daddy hurt the fish (he saw the hook) that he cried. He didn't want to let the fish go because he thought it was hurt, and none of the other fish would take care of him.
